Description

This is one of my pieces for my project on 'defiance' in Year 13 Art- I attempted to depict the level of destruction mankind has inflicted upon the ocean through incorporating plastic and metal wire into the drawing (materials that actually pollute the ocean).
Actually, there was a little piece of plastic attached to my little stingray on the left, near the mouth but it fell off before I took the photo and I just realised now loooool :onfire:

Anyway the process of making the wings was mildly horrific, mainly because it was so disgusting to create.
I basically collected loads of plastic bags, ripped them to shreds, covered them in PVA glue and then coated them in this radioactive looking green paint, then blue and then black- the substance was thick because of the glue and it started dripping everywhere and turning into this weird sludge. Weird sludge is what I wanted though :la: because I wanted to make the wings look clogged up by oil (like how seabirds suffer damage during oil spills) BUT I never let the weird sludge dry by itself, I used a hairdryer to dry it so when the moisture (what a grim word) tries to rapidly evaporate, the glue stops it and these toxic looking bubbles appear and dry upon the plastic.

It was probably the most disgusting thing I've seen, it's like the wings were alive- I felt like Victor Frankenstein :boing: You probably can't see the toxic bubbles, but they're there lol. Actually, the process kinda made me empathise with birds, because I could feel the sludge and how trapping it was- imagine being a bird :onfire: I think I'd cry if my wings were ruined like that. The damage and entrapment that pollution inflicts upon animals is just so unbelievably cruel.

Adding the wire was considerably less compex but because I'm incompetent, like all my other pieces involving metal, it tore my clothes and stabbed me :la:

(please excuse the poor structure of this little description thingy and believe me when I say that I'm doing a degree in English lol)

Actually, seeing as I mentioned Victor Frankenstein (what a loser, have you read the book?)
I gave the figure wings (an unnatural addition to her body considering that the figure is underwater) because I had those weird science accidents in mind when drawing- like when the animal becomes mutated because of pollution or damage to their natural environment.

Someone asked me why the figure is smiling lol, well I guess it helps to illustrate the idea that pollution is a transgression of the relationship we have with nature-if we mistreat it, it will eventually affect us in turn too. So it's like a sinister "haha, you're next" to humanity.

Does that even make sense?
I used colouring pencils, india ink and watercolours. See, I'm not very good with watercolours, but I figured I should use them so the background actually looks like water haha (plus I couldn't be bothered to sit there and colour- yes, that is how useless I am)

I drew my little creatures from photos I took at the aquarium in London near the London Eye :boing: the rays are so cute aww, they just look so happy
You should go and see some rays :la: I really want to see manatees in real life, but I need to go somewhere that has them, because it's cruel to keep captive manatees c:

Protecting the environment is something that has been quite important to me over the last 4-ish years. I mean, I never really appreciated the beauty of the earth (this kinda sounds dumb) until I started to photograph things and realise how hard the vividness of the colours are to replicate when drawing :boing:

So I guess I wanted this piece to be a wake-up call, if you will c;

Anyway, I hope you like it :la:

My deal with Victor Frankenstein...
What an idiot. He's just fundamentally stupid.
Instead of trying to re-animate a freshly dead person (actually, why re-animate in the first place) - the stupid man spends ages digging up dead bodies and hacking random parts off to build an 8ft tall man- he could have made one that's a normal height but NO, the fool doesn't even think about whether the creature can fit through doors without hitting his head.
And then, when the creature is 'born'- he is suddenly surprised that an 8ft assembly of random body parts is terrifying.
Though, I guess without his foolishness, there would be no story, no gothic transgression and no horror...
But I can't help but be annoyed by Frankenstein lol.

EDIT: Sorry about the weird way it was photographed- I'm really small (5ft 1) I had to stand on a table lolololol
